Lighting in an industrial space, whether it be a warehouse, manufacturing plant, distribution centre, logistics depot etc. is extremely important. In all of the above examples there needs to be adequate light that gives employees a well lit and safe environment in which to carry out their work. In the case of manufacturing, the quality of the light also comes into play especially when manufacturing involves fine detail work.
Generally speaking, industrial areas are lit by large 400 Watt metal halide or mercury vapour lights. These are instantly recognisable from the dome reflectors that incase the light bulb. The cost of running these lights is immense not to mention the unwanted addition of heat as these type of lights run very hot.
The Green Guys Group have specific premium lighting that we use for industrial spaces that ensure that the brightness levels are up to scratch, visibility is improved and electricity costs are greatly reduced.
LED Lighting Can Help Your Warehouse, Loading Dock or any other industrial space
- LED lighting creates a well lit and safe environment for employees.
- Greatly reduces warehouse electricity costs.
- Minimal impact to day-to-day operations during installation.
- LED dramatically reduces heat omissions compared to mercury vapour lighting.
There are a few factors that combine to create greater lighting results for retail stores. Here’s some extra information behind retail success:

Things to look out for when upgrading to LED Lighting
When looking at upgrading lighting in an industrial space there are a few considerations that you need to take into account.
This could be the inability to shut down certain areas due to the necessity to keep manufacturing going, or it could be a floor that has a lot of equipment or machinery that would prevent access equipment being used.
In any case The Green Guys have worked with hundreds of large industrial companies that each have unique situations. We have the experience and know-how to work with the company to achieve the desired outcome. This could be splitting the install up into multiple site visits where we work around the schedule of the business in order to prevent any unnecessary interruptions or performing the work after/before hours again to minimise disruptions.
The other main consideration is brightness levels. Upgrading to LED will usually result in an increase to LUX levels which is ideal. All of our installs adhere to AS1680:2008 that stipulates the required LUX levels for different space types and their uses. Older mercury vapour and metal halide lights have a very short lifespan when compared to LED and they have a substantial brightness degradation over time. Some of these older lights can lose 40% of their original brightness after only 4 years. Our LED’s only lose 10% of their original brightness over 50,000 hours!
In a nutshell, the CRI is a measure of how close the light source is in quality to actual daylight. The higher the CRI, the higher quality of the light. CRI is not a measure of brightness or colour but how well colours appear in that light. Studies have shown that something as simple as high CRI LED lights in produce refrigerators vs normal fluorescents result in higher sales as the fruit looks riper, plumper and juicier to the eye.
The beauty of LED lighting is the longer your operational hours are, the faster the lights pay themselves back. With the average payback period for an LED lighting project in a supermarket averaging less than 12 months it’s no surprise that the uptake of LED lighting over other energy efficiency products has been so rapid.
Generally speaking, the other main cost associated with lighting other than the electricity cost is the cost of constantly replacing blown lights. Especially fluorescent tubes. Our LED’s last up to 90,000 hours which, if you’re running your lights 50-80 hours per week, is well over 10 years of run time! Compare this with a regular fluorescent tube that is only rated at an average of 10,000 – 15,000 hours.
